Our Aims and Objectives

The Wallsend Self-Help Group is an organisation whose aim is to bridge the gap which exists in the present NHS services, by offering advice, information and on-going support to people who are suffering the distressing effects of nervous and emotional problems. The staff have extensive experience in successfully teaching people how to 'manage' anxiety by self-help methods. If you suffer from anxiety and would like help to get it down to a more managable level (the level at which everyone has to deal with what is after all a normal human emotion - NOT a mental illness), WE CAN HELP.

Maybe you have been struggling to deal with your problems with little help and support and need to 'manage' anxiety so you can have a better quality of life. We understand your predicament and know how you feel and how bad it can get. We can help you get through it. Our staff care. They have been through it too and know the way to recovery.

An extensive comprehensive library of books / tapes / videos and information sheets are available, and aromatherapy massage (by appointment) by a qualified member of staff can be arranged. Refreshments are served at each meeting. We have occassional guest speakers, and begin each session with some gentle exercise (i.e. Tai Chi) to help ease the muscle tension many of us experience.

A popular part of the meetings is the relaxation session when music and fragrance are used to provide an ideal setting for those who are anxious or depressed.

The following are the Aims and Objectives of our Organisation:

1.

To provide a forum where people with similar problems can come together to learn about the thoughts and feelings they may be experiencing.

2.

To offer advice, information and support with a view to improving self-confidence, self-worth and self-esteem.

3.

To ease the feelings of isolation, which go hand-in-hand with these disorders.

4.

To collect and distribute information.

5.

To promote self-learning, by providing access to a range of educational books, CD's, DVD's and discussion & information sheets on all the relevant issues.

6.

To develop an awareness of the benefits of relaxation, correct breathing techniques, exercise, diet and other strategies such as a change of attitude, positive thinking, problem-solving etc, which have been found to be of real benefit.

7.

To provide links to appropriate self help information and websites so that more people can benefit from their knowledge and advice.

8.

To stimulate interest; encourage, motivate and support people, in their efforts to recover from the distressing and often disabling effects of nervous and emotional disorders.

9.

To ensure that all who seek help from the Group are treated with equality, dignity, respect and acceptance, and to foster an 'air of independence' and give a message to people that there is much that can be done for those who wish to help themselves.

Remember:

Phobias and Panic Attacks are understandable reactions to too much stress.

"Pull yourself together" or "It's only your nerves" are unacceptable and unhelpful.

We can help.
